Our Montrose, CO team includes passionate and experienced therapy practitioners with a diverse suite of accreditations and specialized skills.

Kay Alexander

Owner of Pegasus Equine Therapy, Kay Alexander, lives with her husband, Ben, on their Alexander Ranch in Southwestern Colorado. Located outside the City of Montrose, Kay is realizing her desire to integrate her professional life with her love for horses.

Kay holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin. She is a Colorado Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Level II EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) provider. Kay is a former Colorado State Representative from House District 58 which included six counties in Western Colorado.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Kay’s career has been focused on providing child protective services, mental health and family therapy and serving as a child advocate. In addition, she has provided counseling to hospital trauma patients and worked with employee assistance programs of major corporations, counseling employees and providing trainings in stress management, communication skills and team building. Kay has lectured for the Department of Social Work program at Colorado Mesa University (CMU)/Montrose Campus.

Kay’s passion for horses earlier in her life involved competitive activities in hunter/jumper, dressage and eventing. Later riding her horses on the ranch, herding cattle and trail riding, Kay began to visualize a more interactive relationship with horses through equine designed programs for those in need of mental health and physical therapy. Kay traveled and studied various programs around the country and decided to become a certified equine therapy provider. Upon receiving her Level II EAGALA certification, Kay incorporated Pegasus Equine Therapy in the Spring of 2014.

In 2015, the Colorado Chapter of the National Association of Social Work (NASWCO) honored Kay with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her many contributions to Colorado and her profession.

Kerissa Taylor

Kerissa Taylor grew up trail riding, training horses and dreaming of owning a ranch.  Between her love for horses and using her time with them as a method of healing from depression as a late teen, equine therapy became part of her own self-care journey. Kerissa has always been passionate about sharing equine therapy with others.

In 2018, she began working with Kay Alexander at Pegasus Equine Therapy and became EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) certified in October 2018.  She serves as the Equine Specialist and Internship Director for Pegasus where she is a valuable member of the EAGALA Team, consisting of a licensed mental health professional, the horse, and the Equine Specialist. Kerissa also recruits, trains and supervises Pegasus Interns.

Kerissa and her husband have been pursuing their dream of building a multi-species ranch in Montrose.  She is a Master Herbalist and combines her love for healing and people with a leadership based private school for her children.   She is currently the Vice President of the Montrose Chapter of Rocky Mountain Farmer’s Union and plays an active role with the Farmer’s Market.
